Anonymous asked: amika i heard you're using Kyle's brushes but which one of his brushes are you using for the lineart?
for most of my stuff you see on here lately like comics and stuff i use ink on bristol board. usually microns or a dip pen sometimes if im feeling it, and then I scan it. ive been learning how to use a pentel brush pen too, for far off dreams. basically whatever works.
When I draw or letter digitally I usually use the comics tech pens or “your new favourite inker” that you can get in the Ultimate Drawing Set here. All the brushes in that pack are good and tbh I play with them all sometimes. I’ve been eyeballing those halftone brushes too, they look sooo good. Kyle’s stuff is more than worth what he charges.
(when i letter digitally i use the tech pens and trace over typed text set at 20% opacity)
When I’m doing lineart for a full digital piece like this or this I use a brush that I made but that’s fairly common in inking packs, it’s just a triangle to simulate a more natural line. You can download mine here if you don’t want to make your own. This other dude did an awesome inking pack but it looks like he took it off deviantart. The triangle is the important one though.
also i’m kinda over digital inking cause for me it’s slower than analogue inking, but everyone is different. i do like how it looks.
It also helps to work at 300dpi and scale down to 72 (or 75 if you’ve used halftones) for digital display. It makes your lines look smoother and your work look more detailed than it is.
I dunno. I’m super inconsistent with my tools i think cause I only started drawing & inking vs digital painting in earnest in 2012? I didn’t even really start inking until last year cause I was afraid of commitment (once I got over that I got way better at drawing tho, conquer the fear). I’m still feeling things out & learning.
iamharis asked: Where can I find your comics? I've been looking all over, but couldn't find any
hey thanks! the one i’ve been posting previews for isn’t out yet and it’s also my first for real comic. im new here. i have a couple things here — http://belovedlights.tumblr.com/tagged/comics but that’s it. my new thing is gonna be printed through Image and im sure i won’t shut up about it once it gets closer to being real.
or like worst case scenario if Image burns down i’ll make it a webcomic.
edit: dont burn image down just to see it faster
tutorial: hey amika how did you get that texture
ok a bunch of people have asked me about my colours ive been posting lately and i think trade secrets are dumb and not hiding tricks up your sleeve keeps you on your toes. but yeah my textures are super easy, i consider it post processing.
- i’m using photoshop CC 2014 but im pretty sure you can do this with your version of photoshop. i’ve also had some people yell at me on twitter when i insinuate the GIMP isn’t a comparable program (unfortunately!) and insist that you can do anything in the GIMP that you can in photoshop, so, there you go.
- i’m doing this on a 300dpi image & you might want to mess around with some of these numbers if you’re working smaller than that.
Step 1: i colour my image. most of my shading happens in ink or not at all so my colouring is basically just flats & sometimes coloured lines. i only do shadow when i feel like i need to.
Step 2: i make a new layer on top of everything and fill it with any colour. then filter > noise > add noise, set it to 100%. i do uniform colour noise because i like the shimmery chromatic undertones but do w/e suits your purposes.
hahaha oh man i just noticed — a while back a bunch of screencaps of miyazaki saying it’s clear ghibli was going to fall apart (but he’s smiling and seems lighthearted about it) were going around on tumblr, and when everyone was freakin out cause they thought it had shut down, someone reblogged it having edited out all the screencaps of him smiling. so it looks like he’s sad (im assuming cause the reblogger was sad?). that seems like some zen pencils level mouthpiecing shit???
it’s ok to be nostalgic or even a little broken up at the end of an era but don’t manipulate the image of a dude who I always got the impression was all about moving forward, and who is still creating things on his own because the studio isn’t the artist, just for some cheap feels. it’s tacky.
